What’s wi-bike?
WI-BIKE is the innovative interactive multimedia GPS guide, conceived originally for bike touring, which enables people to make the most of their tourist experience. Developed by a creative integration of state-of-the-art mobile GPS technology and rich multimedia content, WI-BIKE provides travellers with a powerful and practical tool to fully understand and enjoy the space around them.

WI-BIKE combines a bespoke multimedia sat nav with a multimedia guide, all in the same device, at one's fingertips. Thanks to its extremely user-friendly touch-screen interface, WI-BIKE enables tourists to plan their route and be guided through the most interesting sites, while always knowing their position.

The hardware device is based on a Nokia N810, which can be attached to a bike’s handlebar. N810 has a touch screen that is trans-reflective (it guarantees high visibility even in full sun light), it works off-line and on-line and it can give audio directions and be used safely via Bluetooth so that cyclists have their hands free while cycling.

Thanks to the device's built-in GPS, once approaching a point of interest, WI-BIKE starts automatically a multimedia presentation, including audio and video content, with the place’s highlights to provide more in-depth information about each location. WI-BIKE can work off-line, displaying contents that have been previously uploaded onto the device, and on-line also through Wi-Fi connectivity, so it can show real-time updates.

The cartography used for WI-BIKE navigation system is based on satellite photos – similarly to Google Maps. Satellite photographic cartography allows to have such a detail level that is very useful for bike touring or for walking. In fact, they can carry information on the surroundings and they can show also those small roads like bike or walk paths that are usually not indicated in symbolic maps.

WI-BIKE can be removed from the bike’s handlebar and be used also for walking, for example inside a building one’s wishes to visit.
