The cartography used for WI-BIKE navigation system is based on satellite photos – similarly to Google Maps. Satellite photographic cartography allows having such a detail level that is very useful for bike touring or for walking. In fact, they can carry information on the surroundings and they can show also those small roads like bike or walk paths that are usually not indicated in symbolic maps.
The vectorial geo-referenced level, which carries the information on routes and POI (points of interest), is placed over the terrain level images. Wi-bike's maps automatically rotate according to the direction detected by the built-in GPS. This means that the maps always appear in the most evident direction. Moreover, they can be explored in a touch-screen mode and they allow to go back and forth only at the touch of a fingertip.
Maps and multimedia contents can be saved onto the device. Therefore WI-BIKE can work off-line, displaying contents that have been previously uploaded onto the device, and on-line also through Wi-Fi connectivity, so it can show real-time updates.
